Antagonistic Force: Golden Wind, La Squadra
Out of all the parts, many consider part 5, Golden Wind, to wither be one of if not the best part. One of the big reasons why are all of the great characters that inhabit the part, like for example the minor antagonist group La Squadra Esecuzioni or La Squadra.
So today I want to discuss why I and many others consider them to be the best out of the rest of the minor antagonists in Jojo's.
Who Are They?
La Squadra are the former hitmen squad of Passione, now trying to kill their former boss Diavolo to take control over all of his operations. For the first half of part 5, they are essentially the main antagonist. They chase the main characters in hopes of kidnapping the boss's daughter Trish Un, to try and uncover his identity.
What Makes Them Different?
There are a lot of things that make them fascinating characters, for instance, they all have interesting personalities and their stands are cool. But a lot of the time, many of the minor antagonists have the same qualities.
No, what makes them stand out is that, unlike other Jojo's minor antagonists they don't feel like tacked-on obstacles that only serve to prolong the story, they have their own goals that are separate from the main antagonist Diavolo.
Take for instance, in part 3 with the agents of Dio. They're all stand users "employed" by Dio to take out the Stardust Crusaders. However, when faced with taking out the Stardust Crusaders, the agents of Dio have no real initiative to do so other than, they are told by Dio to do so. So it just feels like there is a huge leap in logic as to why they are attacking the main characters.
There are reasons given to why they are following Dio's orders, like money, infatuation with Dio, or just being afraid to disobey him. But these all feel like paper-thin excuses to have a bunch of obstacles for the main characters.
That's where La Squadra differentiates itself from the likes of the Agents of Dio, or the forces of Kira and Pucci. They are a separate group from the main antagonist, that have a similar goal to Giorno's.
La Squadra attacking team Buccilati makes sense because we are given a good reason for them doing what they are doing, as we get their backstory. Their not a random group that have a paper-thin motive, but a fleshed-out antagonist.
That is why many appreciate La Squadra, as many complaints people have about Jojo's come from the "weakly" written antagonist.
Take-Aways
- If you don't have a good reason for your antagonist to be there, maybe they should be there at all.
- Think about the goals your antagonist have and how they impact your protagonist.
That's all I have, for now, have a great day!!
