Power Systems: One Piece, Part 1 Devil Fruits

Usually when someone asks the question, "what do you think is the best power system in anime?".  You're most likely going to see devil fruits from One Piece be mentioned.

So today. I want to discuss why people consider devil fruits to be one of the best, and in a later post talk about haki and why it doesn't come up in these types of conversations.

Spoilers For One Piece

Categories

To start off there are three categories of devil fruits, paramecia, logia, and zoan.

Logia's allow the user to turn their bodies into elements or substances like lightning or sand.

Zoan's allow the user to turn into an animal, either fully or a hybrid that mixes both human and animal.

Lastly, paramecia fruits are anything that arent the other two, this can range from being able to produce posoin from your body or being able to turn youself into a jacket.

Simplicity

Devil fruits for the most part are very simplistic, and I think that is a good thing. Unlike Jujutsu Kaisen or Hunter x Hunter that have very long explanations of how a character's power works, in One Piece you can probably describe most of the devil fruit powers in one sentence.

Luffy ate the gomu gomu no mi, which turned his body into rubber and allows him to stretch. Or Portgas D. Ace who ate the Mera Mera no mi, which turned his body into the fire that he can manipulate.

It makes viewing a fight easy to follow because if we know what type of devil fruit they ate, we can pretty much fill in the blanks or guess what they can do.

What Makes The Fights Interesting

Usually the fun of devil fruits are seeing how the user comes up with a unique way to use it. Take Luffy, his body is now made out of rubber, how do you apply that to a fight? Well he stretches his body in different ways in order to hit his enemies. Or his gear 2, where he uses his rubber body to pump his blood faster which makes him move faster.

Or Eneru, who uses his lightning powers as a sort of sonar plus his mantra powers to detect and dodge everything. Plus his lighting lets him travel super fast in any fight.

Then seeing these unique abilities clash with each other, make for an exciting fight to watch.

Take-Aways

  • Simple power systems can work just as well as complex ones
  • Explaining the framework of your power system can make it easy for the audience to follow the fights.
That's all I have for today, have a great day!!
